MLB.com OnBase
A new AIR application was launched yesterday: MLB.com OnBase. This application helps you stay in touch with your favorite team or player. You can “consume” news from MLB and tweets. Unfortunately, on this side of the pond, we are not into baseball. However, a similar app for NBA, or even better for European Football, will make many people happy in Europe :)
You can find the application here.
Screencast on data paging with Flash Builder and PHP
Not so long ago I wrote an article on how to enable data paging for a data grid using Flash Builder and a PHP backend. Today, I added a screencast for those of you who prefer to watch instead of read.
Enjoy!

My Lab at Adobe MAX 2009
This year, I teaming up with Cornel Creanga and Miti Pricope at Adobe Max, and we will do a very interesting lab: BlazeDS and LiveCycle Data Services in the Cloud. Ever wondered how you can work with LCDS and BlazeDS on Google App Engine or Amazon Services? If so, then our lab can provide you with the answers you need. Our resident J2EE and Flex expert (Cornel) is leading our efforts to craft a cool lab. At the same time, make sure you have a look at the other labs and sessions (I know for sure I would love to attend this one).
You can register for MAX here, and for our lab here. Also, make sure you don’t miss the various discounts Adobe is offering (for example, this one gives you a discount if you are coming to MAX from outside of USA).
Flex for PHP developers article
Finally, I managed to finish an article that introduces Flex to PHP developers comparing features from both worlds (when it makes sense). I’ve been working on this subject from the beginning of this year. Thus I am so happy that I feel I should go out and smoke a fine Cuban cigar :)
While working on this article I realized two things:
- Writing books it is not easy. My work doesn’t compare with a book at all, but still the amount of work was huge. Now, I have an idea about what it means to work on a book.
- Learning a client-side technology coming from the server-side world will never be an easy and straightforward task. You have to adapt to a new world and adopt a different mindset. But then again, with big efforts usually come big rewards! And from my experience, when I learn something new I can always apply some of this knowledge to the concepts I’ve already known.
Enjoy the article and let me know what do you think!
Creating a custom scrollbar in Flex 4
In this screen cast I show you how you can use Adobe Illustrator, Flash Catalyst, and Flash Builder 4 to create a scroll bar that looks different depending on the OS that it is used to run the Flex application.

About unloading Flex modules
Alex Harui (he’s part of Flex SDK team) has a great post about what could cause a module not to be unloaded. Actually you might want to keep an eye on his blog, because you can find great tips for Flex there.
Enjoy!
Hot summer, Flash widgets, and mobile phones
Usually, during summer, we have hot days in Romania. When I say hot, I mean like 40 degrees Celsius! Unless you are at the seaside or somewhere up in the mountains, this weather is not something to be cheerful about.
However, Orange Romania managed to find a good use for it! They created a Flash widget for their website, and the widget advertises discounts for each degree over 24. The widget looks like this (http://www.orange.ro):
The widget displays the temperature in real time. It seems like a smart way to attract new customers these days, and a smart use of the Flash Platform! What do you think?
