The available version of Flex Builder for Linux is still in Alpha. One way to express your desire to have a Flex Builder for Linux is to vote this bug: http://bugs.adobe.com/jira/browse/FB-19053

Every now and then, at a conference someone comes to me to ask about the Linux version. If you are one of these persons, please go and vote.

How to win a Flex Builder license

Last Saturday, while I was in Cluj presenting at the PHP GeekMeet event, I came up with this idea: if you manage to convince a pub owner to hang the Flash/Flex API posters on the wall, then you get a free Flex Builder license. The contest for Cluj has started, as I already gave away 3 posters. I am waiting to find the winner. I’m looking for a nice photo of the beautified and (at the same time) the luckiest wall in town, and maybe a small video).

The next contest starts on May 19th, this time in Bucharest. I will give away posters at Adobe Developer Day. Because we are talking about a really big city, I am willing to grant two licenses. Gentlemen, start your engines :)

Don’t worry, your chance is coming. Hopefully I’ll bring the contest to your town, or one nearby soon.

Tour de Flex stats and Polaris AIR application for Google Analytics

Greg Wilson has posted the stats for the last 16 days for the Tour de Flex AIR application. They are pretty amazing:

Last year, Nico launched a desktop version of Google Analytics using Adobe AIR. The story of this application is pretty interesting. At that time there was no public API for Google Analytics. Thus, he had to reverse engineer the API. Once he figured out the API, he took advantage of the Flash Platform to build a desktop AIR application that makes good use of the charting capabilities of Flex. Actually, I had the pleasure to meet him and chat during a Flex Camp in the Netherlands, last June. I think Google contacted him after he released the application, and he worked with Google to further refine the app. I remember that day very well, because was the same day the Netherlands won against France 4-1 in the European Football Championship :)

Now, the API is available, and Nico has discontinued the old application. Instead, you can install the new one from here. It is called Polaris, and it is very compact. You can use it for free for one account, or you can pay $15 for a year and use the full version. Nico plans to launch three more products this year, all related to the Google Analytics.

The Flash Platform and TVs

Last year we announced Open Screen Project, an initiative led by Adobe to provide a consistent runtime environment for rich Internet applications and  video across screens/devices (PCs, TVs/Set-top boxes/Mobiles) using the Flash Player and Adobe AIR.

One year later, you can already see big ripples: by the end of this year we’ll have Flash Player 10 on mobiles (smartphones and high-end phones). The latest news, is that we have an optimized Flash Platform for TVs, set-top boxes, Blue-ray players, and other devices in the digital home.

Many chips vendors, OEMs, cable operators or content providers announced support for this technology. Just to enumerate a few: Broadcom, Comcast,, Intel, Netflix, STMicroelectronics, Sigma Design.

The technology is available immediately, and probably we will see the first devices early next year.

I don’t know about you, but I would buy today a TV set that knows to display RIA, and lets me see the videos from Hulu and Youtube, or displays the pictures from my Flickr account.

At the same time, it is getting better and better to be a Flash Developer. Being able to target different devices (PCs, TVs, mobiles) using the same technology, it is just great!

You can read the press release here.

Tweeter client: Spreadtweet

I’ve just stumbled upon this cool app: Spreadtweet. It is an AIR application, that let’s you tweet using a client that mimics a spreadsheet software. Thus, if your boss doesn’t let you tweet during working hours, here is the solution.
