Adobe AIR Team
Have you ever wondered about the Adobe AIR team? Who is on it, how many they are, and where they work? Or maybe you have a bug that is driving you mad, and you want to know some names to get your own vendetta :D (it would be fair, as usually we, the evangelist, are the ones who get the blame from people).
Well, this post should shed some light on these questions. Enjoy!
PS. I am trying my best to corner the Romanian AIR team for a short video/interview. They have been dodging me quite successfully so far. They keep feeding me reasons like “We have to launch AIR 1.5″ (they already did that last November), or “We have to complete this feature”, and so on.

AIR and Flash Player census
In little less than a year since its release, the number of AIR runtime installations surpassed the 100 million mark. At the same time, Flash Player 10 is installed on 55% of the computers connected to the Internet, although only two months passed since its release.
Furthermore, in the past 12 months the Flex SDK, AIR SDK, and Flex Builder IDE reach 1 million downloads. And finally, about 80% of the online videos are viewed using Flash.
You can read the full press release here, and this post from the AIR team blog has some additional information.

Netherlands PHP conference: phpgg Frontend Special
Last Saturday (January 24th), I had the pleasure of presenting a session at the “phpGG Frontend Special” conference in The Hague, Netherlands. Although it was the first edition, everything went smoothly. I have to say a big thank you to Kana, Remi, and Stefan. Also thank you to Rein (kudos to Remi for reminding me). There were about 50 people, and during the six hours of the event I had the chance to talk with some of them.
The content of the conference seemed to be interesting judging by the people’s reaction as I don’t speak Dutch. There were four session of 45 minutes, and twos three sessions of 15 minutes. My session was “Flex and AIR for PHP programmers”, and basically I gave a quick overview of what Flex and AIR are, and why you should use them and where. I intended to code two examples live (one Flex app with REST services, and one AIR app with ZendAMF-remoting), but because I was running out of time, I coded only one example, and I just walked through the other one. And still I didn’t managed to finish on time. Arrrrrrrgh!
PS. Thank you for the nice gift! And thank you Rick for the nice chat on our way back to Amsterdam! Hope to see you next year at the same event.
PS2. This was also a test for me, because I left for the conference in the morning (from Bucharest, Romania), and I came back at midnight. Basically, for 21 hours I was traveling, waiting for a connection, or attending/speaking at the conference. I shot some videos; when I have the time I will put them together!
Flex Europe Style: Flex is asynchronous!
Last year, when I was in Amsterdam, I had this idea of explaining the asynchronous nature of Flex, using something that came to me while visiting Amsterdam’s Coffee Shops. I have to say that I am a huge fan of Pulp Fiction :)
Anyway, last Sunday night I couldn’t sleep, so I shot this video. It was also a chance for me to get my hands for the first time in movie editing. Adobe Premiere CS4 rocks :).

Flex and AIR apps with PHP backends
Last year, I had the idea of creating a list of Flex and AIR applications that use PHP on the server. One reason was my own curiosity, as I used to earn my living as a PHP programmer. And I really want to know what RIA applications the PHP community is building. Another reason was more pragmatic: I get questions about real life examples from PHP programmers.
And finally, yesterday, I published the first draft of the list, as a permanent page on my blog: http://corlan.org/flexair-and-php-apps/
If you happen to know any such applications, please leave a comment on that page or email me. I want to keep adding apps, and at the same time my curiosity is not satisfied yet.
Thanks!
Fiat’s Eco drive AIR application
My colleagues, Serge Jespers and Andrew Shorten, just posted on their sites a video about why Fiat decided to make this application, and how AKQA built it. You can see the video here, or here.
